The United Nations was established following the after-effects of the World War II devastation. In recent times, there have been discussions and debates over the need for strengthening and reforming the United Nations. This assumes significance at a time when the international institutions are burdened by increasing responsibilities in the domains of conflict management and the need to foster cooperation at a global level.

Unlike its predecessor, the League of Nations, United Nations has survived and prospered in its seventy-five years as the world’s largest and most representative international agency. However, it is currently burdened by a few problems, including underfunding, divisiveness, and geopolitical competition among the Security Council’s permanent members.

Watch this lecture to understand the reforms needed in the United Nations and much more.

In this video, you will learn:

1. UN Reforms (00:00)
2. United Nations (0:40)
3. Composition of UN (6:18)
4. UNGA v/s UNSC (11:35)
5. Why UN Reforms are needed? (15:36)
6. UN Reforms Agenda (25:28)
7. India & UN Reforms (30:34)

Some other aspects covered in the session are United Nations reforms, UN reforms and India, need for UN reforms, United Nations security council reforms, etc.

The UNSC (United Nations Security Council) is one of the 6 principal organs of the United Nations.
The United Nations General Assembly has identified five sets of issues. These are
1. Categories of membership
2. The question of the veto
3. Regional representation
4. Size of an enlarged Council and its working methods and
5. The Security Council-General Assembly

The UNSC was only ever increased once, in 1963, to include 4 non-permanent members. The composition of the UNSC has remained the same even though the number of UN members has gone from 113 to 193.

India's prospects

Nearly 110–115 of the UN's 193 member states support the stance taken by the G-4 (India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil) and the L-69 group of developing nations regarding UN reforms.

Some key questions are also discussed in the session.
