Thank you for being here :) In this video, I visited Sawada Mansion, Japan's Biggest Illigal Building that challenged human potential in Kochi prefecture.

This apartment building, tucked away in an alley off Kochi's main street and dubbed "Japan's Biggest Illigal Building," is a maze of extensions built by a couple determined to "challenge human potential." I spent several nights there and read "Sawada Mansion Story," which recounts the lives of the Sawadas who devoted themselves to constructing this unique home. The book celebrates their inventive spirit and their break from traditional norms. The Sawada family shares their home with dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, and flying squirrels. They pioneered rooftop farming, a concept far ahead of its time, and despite their own past hardships, they have offered substantial support to other struggling families. The building encapsulates these inspiring tales and distinctive allure.
