“Maria durch ein Dornwald ging” is possibly one of the oldest Christmas songs known.
The first official published version is from 1850, but there are references to what could be the same song as early as 1608
and the melody reaches back to the middle age.
The title translates roughly to “Maria went through a thorny forest” - referring to the biblical figure of Mary.
The song became associated with Advent in Germany in the 1800s and has been widely sung in churches and choirs ever since.
This video is a composite of all 12 concerts played throughout Germany in December 2022
for the release of the album Quadro Nuevo: DECEMBER plus drone footage (credit to Andreas Hinterseher) of the Chiemsee and Fraueninsel.
