Bhishma, one of the most revered warriors and statesmen in the Mahabharata, was the son of King Shantanu and Ganga. Originally named Devavrata, he earned the title Bhishma after taking a lifelong vow of celibacy and renouncing his claim to the throne to fulfill his father’s wish. His unmatched loyalty, wisdom, and sense of duty made him the pillar of the Kuru dynasty. As the granduncle of both the Pandavas and Kauravas, he played a crucial role in their upbringing. Despite his deep love for righteousness (dharma), he was bound by his loyalty to the throne of Hastinapura and fought on the side of the Kauravas during the Kurukshetra War. Due to a boon from his father, he had the power to choose the time of his death (Ichha Mrityu). He was ultimately defeated by Arjuna with the help of Shikhandi, and he lay on a bed of arrows until he imparted wisdom to Yudhishthir before passing away. Bhishma symbolizes self-sacrifice, duty, and unwavering commitment to principles, making him one of the most respected figures in Hindu mythology.
