The battle took place at the Alamo in San Antonio. While a small group of Texas soldiers were hiding out in an old mission church, Santa Anna, the leader of Mexico’s army, attacked them with his huge army.

Every Texas soldier stepped across Colonel Travis’s famous line in the sand and stood his ground to die for Texas freedom that day. The story of their bravery spread far and wide with the saying “Remember the Alamo.”

This bravery inspired the courage of the Texas fighters who defeated Santa Anna’s army in the battle of San Jacinto just one month later. On April 21, 1836, Texas stood a free country!
