On the 5th January 1984 on a packed Coetzenburg Stellenbosch, the 17 year old Zola Budd came to the attention of the world when she ran faster than the existing world record for the 5000m. The record at the time was 15;08.26 by Mary Decker-Slaney (USA) set in 1982 in Eugene, Oregon and on that evening she ran 15;01.83, but because South Africa at the time was suspended by the IAAF, the record was rejected.

Also in the race was a young Elana van Zyl (Meyer) who in 1992 won a silver medal in the 10000m at the Olympic Games.
