Ashy Prinia (Prinia socialis)
It is also called as wren warblers, warblers are those small passerine birds who are vocal and sing songs. They produce beautiful sounds. Ashy prinia scientific name is Prinia socialis.
It belongs to cisticolidae family, this family has 29 species and ashy prinia does not have any subspecies.
It is found in all Indian subcontinent region (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Srilanka, Bhutan and Myanmar you can spot these beautiful creatures.
They are resident birds and do not migrate, breed and increase their population.
From beak to tail its length is 13cm to 14cm and it has black and strong beak with the help of which it kills and eats its prey.
It has a grey brown and rufous colour tinge on plumage. Wings are round in shape. Eyes are ruby colour.
You can also study its behavior from its tail, look at this tail its long and is having black spots on them.
It balances itself with the help of this tail on bushes and in the air and also plays around. They built their nest using different types of techniques.
It uses animal hair in their nest or it also sew the leaves together and it also uses spider web to sew the leaves together.
Breeding season starts from pre-monsoon or in monsoon. Female gives 3 to 5 chestnut and glossy appearing oval shaped eggs, from which chicks hath after 10 to 12 days and are in parental care. After 14 to 18 days’ chicks are ready to leave their nest and live free.
Amazing thing is that when they fly and hop sound like electric spark is produced. Bird researchers thought that this voice came from their wings but later on it was find that it was the beak which was making this sound. This is an insectivorous bird and it eats small insects, butterflies, grasshoppers, larva, beetle larvae. Mongoose, snake, cats and monitor lizards are their natural predators.
There is a bird who disturbs them so much and its called grey belly cuckoo. It’s a brood parasite. It occupies the nest of the prinia and lays its egg in there. When baby cuckoo hatch it throws the eggs of prinia and prinia thinks it as her own chick and take cares of him and feed him.
Human also destroys its home by burning these common reed bushes they are commonly called as “kana” in our local language they make different types of handmade things from them. By burning the nest babies and adult prinia sometimes also dies. Conservation status is least concern (LC).
