Drone Swarm:

Drone Swarm is a technical marvel of a game where you control 32,000 independently operating drones as you search for a new home to replace Earth. The swarm has three primary modes of action attack, defend, and a kinetic push. Each of these actions has sub-actions that are learned as you progress through the game, but they all mesh together to form a strategy sci-fi experience. This is one of the better presented indie games that I have played this year. The environments specifically have a lot of care that went into the details of the large ships, planets, and celestial bodies that make up the background. This paints of a picture that you truly are fighting in the vastness of space.


It wasn't all positives for Drone Swarm though. The simplicity of the combat mechanics made the game feel less strategic than it needed to be. Often times I felt like I was just frantically scribbling lines on the screen as opposed to carefully considering my actions in response to the enemies. The enemy variety was very good with all sorts of enemies doing different roles and attacks, however I found that many of the enemies looked too similar, or at least they were difficult to remember which enemy did what, which made my strategies always fall back to the most basic "Defend the ship, attack the enemies in random order"


Drone Swarm is a great game on many fronts, including it's story which managed to keep me playing long after the combat mechanics had lost my interest. However this game won't be for everyone. If you're a sci-fi fan, or someone that really wants to try something new, then check this one out. If you're someone that wants an RTS like experience with drones in space, you may want a second opinion or wait for a deep discount here.
