University of Ottawa Professor of Public Affairs Patrick Fafard slams US President-elect Donald Trump after he claimed Canada should join the US as the 51st state.

“Since it is impossible to imagine a scenario in which that would happen, we need to ask the question why does he keep returning to it?” Mr Fafard told Sky News Australia.

“The answer is, it’s provocative, it makes news headlines, it appeals to some people in his base.

“At some point, people in Canada are beginning to push back to Donald Trump … and rightly so because it’s kind of pointless and not just disrespectful, it's just all rather silly.”
