What comes to mind when one thinks about the term Cheongsam or Qipao?

In modern Singapore, Cheongsam is sometimes a fashion statement we don only during the festive seasons. Even then, we often see ourselves gravitating towards the newer interpretations of the Cheongsam, like ones that are injected with western and japanese influences, or ones repurposed into modern silhouettes to fit current fashion trends.

Details that characterise the Cheongsam such as the mandarin collar, frog fasteners and silk embroidery, are also now held in place as decorations, instead of utility.

Yet, despite it all, the feeling of putting on a Cheongsam is still thoroughly unmatched. Maybe it is the way it hugs your body that forces a certain posture; or perhaps it is the silent force of empowerment from the women of the forgotten past. Afterall, the traditional Cheongsam was once the signifier of modern working women from all around Asia post war.

While the beauty of the Cheongsam is widely appreciated by many, the significance behind this traditional robe still feels largely forgotten.

There are certainly more to the cheongsam that we should be proud of — not just in culture, but its identity as one of the first markers of the changing roles in women.
