Spectrum of “Cultural” Terms: Words that Prompt or Prevent Action

Did you know that the words you use can help or hinder taking action? We are in a time where language is evolving quickly and many people don’t know which approach is “right” or know the purpose of the terms they use. Without understanding the origins and intent of the approaches we adopt, we may unintentionally be getting in the way of DEI progress. This is a common place to be and we want to help!

This live event was originally hosted on LinkedIn and is now available on Youtube as a DEI learning nugget. I give an overview of terms like tolerance, awareness, sensitivity, competence, humility, responsiveness, and safety, explaining their historical contexts and how they have evolved. The purpose of this nugget is to help people understand the nuances of each term and ways language can shape the actions taken or avoided. Highlights of what I cover:
