What is a crossbencher?
Now, the word doesn't mean an “angry” or a “cross” member of parliament. Although often members of parliament can be quite cranky. A crossbencher, is a member of parliament who does not belong to either of the major parties, which means they can vote how they see fit. Anytime they want in the chamber. The reason the crossbench has received so much attention recently, is because they've held what's known as the balance of power in the Senate. Now when you have the balance of power that means that the government must negotiate with you, if they want to get their reforms through. It's likely that after the 2019 election we will see a pretty sizeable crossbench in the Senate once again. But for South Australia, Centre Alliance, we are on the crossbench but we are guided by you, our voters, about how we should represent our state in the Senate.
