The examination of witnesses in the sensational murder case involving actor Darshan has officially begun. The trial started on December 17 at the 57th CCH court in Bengaluru, marking a crucial phase in the Renukaswamy case. Renukaswamy’s mother, Ratnaprabha, became the first prosecution witness to face questioning. The hearing began at around 4:30 pm, and she was cross examined by Senior Advocate S. Balan, who is representing Pavithra Gowda, the first accused in the case. During the questioning, the defence focused heavily on the events leading up to Renukaswamy’s disappearance on June 8, 2024, especially his last phone call and the missing mobile phone, which the prosecution claims played a key role in the alleged motive. Advocate Balan first asked Ratnaprabha whether her son had contacted her before he went missing. She replied that yes, Renukaswamy had called her and said he would not come home for dinner. Balan then questioned her about an earlier police statement, which reportedly mentioned that Renukaswamy said he was going out to dinner with four friends. Ratnaprabha denied giving such a statement. When the lawyer showed her a four page police statement, she responded that she did not remember when or at what time she made that statement. The defence then questioned the police investigation. Balan asked whether the police checked Ratnaprabha’s mobile phone after she mentioned the call. She answered no, saying her phone was not checked. Further questions were raised about mobile phones used in the family. Ratnaprabha confirmed that she, her husband, and her daughter in law all use separate phones. However, when asked about her phone’s network provider, she said she did not know. The lawyer also questioned Renukaswamy’s routine. Ratnaprabha stated that her son usually wore a uniform to work at a pharmacy. But on Saturday, the day he went missing, he did not wear his uniform. Another key point raised by the defence was the claim that Renukaswamy had gone to Balaji Bar in Chitradurga on that day. Ratnaprabha strongly denied this, saying her son had never been to a bar, and she did not know if he went there on the day he disappeared. Balan also asked about a gold chain Renukaswamy was allegedly wearing. Ratnaprabha said the police did not hand over any such chain, and she did not give evidence regarding it. Due to time constraints, the court adjourned the hearing to December 18, directing that questioning resume at 12:30 pm. Advocate Balan stated that he would require at least two more hours for further cross examination. Actor Darshan was present in court during the proceedings. Darshan was seen yawning and dozing off during the hearing. Earlier, he had informed the court that he was unable to sleep in jail due to back pain and extreme cold. Acting on his plea, the court directed jail authorities to provide additional blankets. Meanwhile, the defence has strongly questioned the missing mobile phone, which the prosecution claims was used to send objectionable messages to Pavithra Gowda. Advocate Balan argued that without the actual phone, which police say was thrown into a storm water drain, the digital evidence lacks proper forensic verification.
