TEDBF Update
TEDBF – Indian Navy’s twin engine deck based fighter jet program is equally important for Navy as that of AMCA for Air Force, however there has been very little update floating around this program. Finally there are some good news related to TEDBF program. In a recent interview with Vayu Aerospace Review, the Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy has informed that the preliminary work for development of the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) has begun at ADA with support from Indian Navy. The Project is being monitored by Naval project office at Bengaluru which was set up to monitor the Naval Tejas Program. The most important update which came out of this was related to the first flight and the production roll out of TEDBF. As per the Naval Chief the fighter jet will take its first flight by the year 2026 and will enter production 5 years after that i.e., in 2031.
TEDBF Program Progress
The Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) is a canard delta wing, twin-engine, carrier based, multirole combat aircraft currently under development. It is designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and will be manufactured by HAL. Indian Navy is working closely with the DRDO and the ADA on this project. ADA has earlier worked out two configurations for the TEDBF program: "Delta-Canard" and "Trapezoidal with Tail". The Preliminary Service Quality Requirements (or PSQR) have been defined, and Indian Navy has selected The Delta-Canard wing configuration. The Wind tunnel testing on its scaled model has also been performed. The same model was displayed in Aero India show 2021 as well.
Detailed Development RoadMap
As per the plan first prototype of TEDBF is supposed to be rolled out by 2025 and first flight is planned by 2026. The Initial trials will be done on the Shore Based Test Facility (SBTF) at Goa and the last phase trials will be conducted on the aircraft carrier. TEDBF will have Short Take-off but Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) type system. TEDBF production has been planned from 2030 onwards. The first batch of IOC configuration are planned to be rolled out from 2034.
At present, there are many systems which are yet to be developed for TEDBF. ADA, NAVY and HAL are working in coordination for the development of foldable wings and landing gear system. The landing gear system being developed would be capable to withstand the weight of 26Ton during take-off and landing.
