They had escaped horrific conditions in distant Dandakaranya camps in central India, hoping to rebuild their lives in their cultural homeland. But what followed was a tragic eviction operation under the newly elected Left Front government led by Chief Minister Jyoti Basu.
From January to May 1979:
• An economic blockade cut off food, water, and supplies.
• Police actions included firings, alleged brutality, rapes, and forced evictions.
• Thousands died from starvation, disease, violence, and drownings—official figures claim only a handful, but survivor accounts and researchers estimate deaths in the thousands (some as high as 10,000).
