Описание к видео Common Justice Talks: False Dichotomies - the complete webinar

Common Justice Talks: False Dichotomies: Those harmed are greater than those who cause harm is the first iteration of a new quarterly series hosted by Common Justice. In this live webinar recording, the audience had the chance to hear directly from those who work at Common Justice about why we choose to use the term “survivor” over “victim”, and what role that language plays in changing the narrative around who survivors are, what they want, and what they look like. The purpose of this webinar discussion is to dispel the myth that survivors of violence and those who cause it are inherently different people with different needs.

Common Justice typically uses “survivor” to refer to people who have experienced violence, including sexual violence, gun violence, abuse, and police violence. The term “survivor” also applies to people who are heavily impacted by systems of oppression, including the criminal legal system and economic and social exclusion. The vast majority of people who have experienced this type of oppression in the U.S. are Black and Brown people. This is why racial equity is one of our key pillars at Common Justice and why our project, United for Healing Equity, aims to politicize the term 'Survivor' so that policies can be made to provide equal access to healing for all survivors of violence.

Recorded live via zoom on March 31st, 2021.

ABOUT COMMON JUSTICE:
Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration.

Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted.

Rigorous and hopeful, we build practical strategies to hold people accountable for harm, break cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing, and justice for survivors and their communities.
