This is the first video in a new series called Here Was the News.

I’ve always loved history and old newspapers. I was brought up around them. In this series, I read news stories exactly as they were reported at the time.

The headlines are my own, in the style of the tabloids, but the stories themselves are read verbatim, as they appeared in newspapers over 100 years ago.

This video includes three stories involving dogs coming to the rescue, reported between 1887 and 1896.

Sources include newspapers from the north-east of England, The Globe, and the Illustrated press.
