🐦 Overview:
Swainson's thrush (Catharus ustulatus), also known as the olive-backed thrush or russet-backed thrush, is a medium-sized songbird most recognized for its ethereal, ascending flute-like song and subtle brown plumage with a distinctive buff-colored eye-ring.

Identification:
Swainson's thrush measures about 16–20 cm (6.3–7.9 in) in length, with a wingspan averaging 30 cm (12 in) and a weight between 23 and 45 grams (0.81–1.59 oz). Its upperparts are brown or olive-brown (more reddish on western birds), while the underparts are creamy with brown spots, and it has pink legs and a prominent light brown eye-ring. This bird is often confused with the hermit thrush and veery, but the distinct eye-ring sets it apart.

Habitat and Range:
Swainson's thrush breeds in dense coniferous or mixed forests with ample undergrowth across Canada, Alaska, and the northern United States, particularly in the boreal and Pacific coastal regions. During migration, it can be found throughout the United States, often appearing in parks and forest edges. The wintering range extends from Mexico through Central and South America down to northern Argentina

Behavior and Song:
This thrush feeds mainly on insects, berries, and small fruits and is known for its shy and secretive behavior in woodlands and thickets. Its song is a rapid series of spiraling, flute-like tones that rise in pitch—a notable characteristic among North American thrushes.

Conservation Status:
Swainson's thrush is generally considered secure globally, though declining populations have been noticed in some regions, primarily due to loss of boreal and mature forest habitat and continued fragmentation of breeding grounds. Conservation efforts emphasize sustainable forestry and habitat preservation to support long-term population health.

Subspecies:
There are two main groups: the “russet-backed” coastal group and the “olive-backed” inland group. These sometimes hybridize where their ranges meet, particularly in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia.
Swainson's thrush remains an iconic woodland songbird of North America, valued for its beautiful song and important role in forest ecosystems
