This new composition by Tobin Mueller is included in Volume 5 of his Best Of series subtitled "CHILL": a compilation of his best chill jazz, late night offers, and more tranquil recordings. "First Contact" features Mikie Martel on flugelhorn, Italian drummer Ugo Rossi, pianist Tobin Mueller, and bass player Kenny Cash. Ruben de Ruiter (The Netherlands) adds cymbal swells, highlighting the more Star Trek moments.

Loosely based on the 5-note motif made famous in the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", this original piece gently floats between keys, giving a sense of shifting dimensions, of the turning night sky. The bridge section is a fantasy on the original Star Trek theme, as Martel layers in additional flugelhorns and trumpets to create the feel of an expanding brass section. The five musical tones in Close Encounters are, in solfege, Re, Mi, Do, Do, So. The second Do is an octave below the first. The five tones were chosen by composer John Williams after trying about 350 of the approximately 134,000 possible five-note combinations available in the 12-tone chromatic scale. He said the choice was arbitrary. Inhabitants of a distant galaxy would recognize and appreciate a melody formed of the major or minor scales, because they are both derived from universal acoustic principles: a vibrating string in another galaxy will have the same harmonic partials as it does here. The first and most audible of those partials are Do, Do an octave higher, So, Mi, and Re - the same ones John Williams chose. Mueller alters them with each of his variations.
