Top 6 Japanese Aircraft of World War II | Military Hisstory |
Before and during World War II, Japan's military aviation sector witnessed remarkable development. The Japanese aviation industry produced many successful fighter aircraft such as the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, Nakajima Ki-27, Nakajima Ki-43,Kawanishi N1K, Kawasaki Ki-100, Mitsubishi J2M3 'Raiden', ... causing terrible nightmares for the Allied forces.

In addition to the famous fighters mentioned above, Japan also produced another very successful fighter aircraft, the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (called Frank by the Allied forces). It was considered Japan's best fighter aircraft in large-scale operations.

Japan's fastest fighter aircraft

The development of the Nakajima Ki-84 began in 1942 at the request of the Imperial Japanese Air Force to supplement and gradually replace the Nakajima Ki-43. The requirement was that the new aircraft should have the excellent maneuverability of the Ki-43 coupled with sufficient firepower to counter the well-armored fighters of the Allies.

The Ki-84 made its first flight in March 1943, and mass production and entry into service began in 1944. The Ki-84 had a similar aerodynamic design to the Ki-43 with some modifications to the airframe and flaps. The aircraft overcame most of the weaknesses of the Ki-43 in terms of maneuverability, weak firepower and poor armor protection.
