With 700 million new urbanites expected in African cities by 2050, the issue of housing is becoming crucial. Faced with a massive housing gap, pressure is already being felt at the municipal level, where city governments are the gate keepers of adequate housing. They play a central role in land assembly, servicing, building inspections, service delivery and urban management. However, given the pressure of urbanisation, cities face challenges fulfilling this role at the scale required. Without adequate housing, cities cannot function efficiently and equitably. Instead, informal settlements expand, urban sprawl increases, and cities lose both tax revenue and economic potential.

Organised by the Sahel and West Africa Club (OECD/SWAC), in partnership with the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa (CAHF) and the African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF), this webinar is the third and final in a series that brings together experts and policymakers to discuss specific, urgent and interrelated aspects of sustainable urban development. It follows previous sessions on land governance and urban financing.
