Our Turkey Is SICK!!! [Caring For Sick Poultry]

If you own poultry or farm animals, at some point, some livestock will become sick. Well today I noticed Rufus, our pet turkey, eyes were a little swollen, and this generally means, respiratory infection. Respiratory infections are not uncommon in the poultry world and are easily treatable with broad spectrum antibiotic. The one we like to use is LA200, bc it is easy to find, and works fast. The recommended dose is 0.2cc per lb or 1cc per 5lbs, and LA200 is IM, intermuscular, which means you inject it in a muscle, this being the breast muscle in our turkey. The LA200 last 3 days in the poultry's system, so you will not give again till after day 3. After the shot, we then apply VetRX around the turkey s head and waddle, and this helps him breathe, kinda like using Vicks vapor rub. Now we will watch our pet turkey for the next couple of weeks, and generally from our experience, after 6 to 9 days, they get better, and typically on average only need 3 doses, but each situation is different. Always check with your vet first, IF you have a vet that does handle and deal with poultry, but in our area, we do not, so we try and do everything ourselves.
