In Brazil, a groundbreaking initiative called "Redemption through Reading" offers inmates a unique path to rehabilitation: reducing their prison sentences by reading books.

For each approved book an inmate reads, they can shave off four days from their sentence. By reading up to 12 books a year, they can reduce their time by 48 days annually. ​

But it's not just about reading. Inmates must write a handwritten essay demonstrating their understanding of the book. These essays are reviewed by a special panel to ensure authenticity and comprehension. ​

Brazil's prison system faces challenges like overcrowding and low literacy rates. Approximately 70% of inmates haven't completed primary education.
