-------
Every Arabic noun/ISM (اسْم) has four properties
1. Definiteness (مَعْرَفَة - تَنْكِيْر)
2. Gender - الْجِنْس
3. Number - الْعَدَد
4. Case - 'Iraab - الْإِعْرَاب

Understanding the four properties is essential for understanding Arabic. Without getting a mastery of these we will not able to understand, use, or translate any Arabic sentences or phrases.

In this lesson [#01-P2] we give an overview of the four properties with a detailed introduction to I'raab - إِعْرَاب.

(1) Definiteness (مَعْرَفَة - تَنْكِيْر)
Just like an English noun - An اسْم will be either
(i) definite (مَعْرِفَة) - الْمُسْلِمُ (The Muslim) or
(ii) indefinite (نَكِيْرَة) - مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim)

(2) Gender - الْجِنْس
In English an اسْم, we have a natural gender - but in Arabic there is NO neutral gender, an اسْم has to be treated either as

(i) Masculine - مُذّكَّر e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a male Muslim) or
(ii) Feminine - مُؤَنَّث e.g. مُسْلِمَةٌ (a female Muslim)

(3) Number - الْعَدَد
In English nouns are either singular or plural (2 or more), in Arabic an اسْم can be
(i) Singular - مُفْرَدٌ e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim)
(ii) Dual - مُثَنَّى - e.g. مُسْلِمَانِ (Two Muslims)
(iii) Plural - جَمْع - e.g. مُسْلِمِيْنَ (Muslims)

What is I'raab إِعْرَابٌ ?
This property is unfamiliar to English speaking students. As there is no direct equivalent in English.
The إِعْرَابٌ (status/case) of an اسْم can be in of 3 cases

(i) Rafa - رَفْع e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim)
(ii) Nasab - نَصْب - e.g.مُسْلِمًا (a Muslim)
(iii) Jarr - جَرّ- e.g. مُسْلِمٍ (a Muslim)
