10 Years Later: Inside the NBA Looks Back on Magic Johnson's HIV Announcement (2001)

November 7, 2001 - Ten years following Magic Johnson's announcement that he'd contracted the HIV virus and was subsequently retiring from NBA basketball, the Inside the NBA crew looked back on how Johnson's news shook not just the sports arena, but the country as a whole. In addition, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Doug Collins, and Pat Riley all took turns weighing in on how the news affected them personally. At the time of Johnson's announcement, many believed HIV inevitably led to AIDS which in turn had grave consequences. However, since his positive test, Johnson's medical treatment, which includes a drug cocktail of three or four antiretroviral drugs, have helped limit the symptoms of HIV while also staving off AIDS, allowing Johnson to live an active, healthy, and productive lifestyle for over 25 years.
