One of the conflicts that does sometimes occur while fishing is bird entanglements in discarded fishing line or hooks, and there are simple ways this can be avoided.

We all have a responsibility to look after wildlife while wetting a line and it's up to all fishers to know how to fish in a way that minimises the chances of entangling a bird and what to do if they do catch a bird.

Bird entanglement avoidance and tips:
1) Do not fish near birds or feed them.
3) If you hook a bird, do not cut the line and reel it in gently.
4) Protect your eyes, place a towel over the bird, carefully grab the beak, cover its eyes and fold the wings.
5) Cut the hook and untangle the line.
6) If bird is not injured, carefully release it. If it is injured, call the Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055.
