The beauty of Night XC skiing in Norway

Описание к видео The beauty of Night XC skiing in Norway

Cross country skiing, Norway’s national sport. Only difference? It’s nighttime. But once again, we’re at arguably Norway’s best cross country skiing location: Sjusjøen.

Also known as Nordic skiing, sometimes ski touring, or simply XC skiing, this sport is growing increasingly popular thanks to the combination of exercise, technique, and often stunning scenery.

The combination of head torches and lighting on the Sjusjøen trails makes for a magical night skiing experience.

As you may have seen from our earlier videos, Sjusjøen really does have it all. It’s the location for several cross country skiing races throughout the ski season, including the famous Birkebeinerrennet which runs through Sjusjøen. And is also the perfect place to ski morning, evening and night.

Cross country skiing, or langrennsski as it’s known in Norwegian, actually has two quite distinct styles, classic and skating (klassisk and skøyte in Norwegian respectively). The equipment, and more importantly technique, are quite different in each. Most XC skiing beginners start with classic, and then move onto skating which is usually considered more challenging.

The night skiing experience also offers a chance to see a different side of nature, with rabbits, and even moose and deer in the area.

Many professionals come to Sjusjøen to train, including Petter Northug, Johannes Klæbo, Marit Bjørgen, Øystein Pettersen, many of whom have won Olympic medals and represent the best of the best at the sport. And not to forget Therese Johaug.
