Check Out the Guitar Daily Workout!

The Guitar Daily Workout is a comprehensive system of technique studies designed to help intermediate guitarists master the essential scales, arpeggios and exercises of the instrument.
The Guitar Daily Workout will increase physical skills and will help a guitar student master the understanding of the guitar neck by having a daily practice regimen that systematically teaches the most important exercises to learn the neck and develop agility, independence, strength and accuracy.
Each system is to be practiced for about 1/2 hour per day 5 days a week for 12 weeks.
_______________________________________
Welcome to System 2! And congratulations on getting through System 1. In System 1, we laid a foundation upon which we can begin to build. System 1 covered some of the most important basics of guitar technique.
In System 2, we will expand on these techniques. We will cover some similar ground but add to the complexity of the patterns, practicing every CAGED form in each week's practice routine. This should solidify your memorization of the forms. By diligent focused practice, you will begin to see all of these patterns across your guitar neck in all keys.
Once you complete System 2, you should be fluid in all the forms of the CAGED system. Competency in these forms is essential for guitar mastery. You will use them for the rest of your playing life. Each week, we will travel through the forms following the Circle of Fifths.
Finger Gymnastics
Finger Gymnastics are exercises that help to develop finger strength and dexterity. Though not musical in nature, they help to sync the left and right hand, strengthen fingers, and develop finger independence by practicing patterns that are unusual or difficult.
In System 2, we will use the same finger patterns as in System 1, but with one twist. The finger patterns will again be 1234-1243-1324-1342-1423-1432. However, each time we move to the next string, instead of simply moving to the adjacent string, we will skip a string. This means that when we are on the E string, we will jump to the D string rather than the A string and so on.
Often, improvisors use intervallic jumps rather than just playing the next note in the scale (that’s what gives interest to your lines), so it is important for us to be able to skip strings fluidly.
In System 2, we will go through all 5 forms of the CAGED system for arpeggios, pentatonics, and major scales. Each week, we will work through a different key by going through the Circle of Fifths. By playing through these forms in a different key each week, you will begin to associate each form of the CAGED system with the related arpeggio, pentatonic, and major scale. So, if you know the key you are in, you should be able to see the octave, the arpeggio shape, and the connected pentatonic and major scale. Though the concepts are still simple, by the time you finish this system, you should be able to clearly visualize every form of arpeggio, pentatonic, and major scale across the entire guitar neck.
These will be your core building blocks for all other scales and arpeggios you learn as you progress as a musician.
Octaves
We will again go through our octave patterns as we did in System 1. They are the hook upon which all other exercises in the systems hang. Because octaves are so vital to understanding the geometry of the guitar neck, we will spend one more system practicing them. In System 2, we will travel in the Circle of Fifths for octaves also. Concentrate on speed and accuracy, and try to visualize octaves across the neck as you are playing them.
Arpeggios
System 2 Arpeggios will build upon the arpeggio exercises in System 1. Each week, we will go through all 5 forms of the CAGED system so that we begin to see the different connection areas of the neck. Mastering these will allow us to know all of the notes of the arpeggios across the entire neck, thus connecting the full neck together.
Pentatonics
Like the arpeggios, System 2 Pentatonics build directly from System 1 Pentatonics. This exercise will go through all 12 keys and each form of the pentatonic. It is based out of the CAGED system and is often your ‘home base’ scale to begin to improvise. These are essential skills for all guitarists to know.
Major Scales
In System 2 Major Scales, we will go through all forms of the CAGED system each week. Every week begins in a different key, going through all 12 keys over the 12 weeks. This is important. Often, players are more confident in certain keys.
But in order to become a competent improvisor, it’s more important to see the ‘dots’ or patterns of the form, not just the dots on the neck.
As you complete this system, you should really begin to understand the geometry of the neck and feel much more confident in knowing all of the core arpeggios and scales.
Good luck with System 2!
