Lilting is a sedately paced British drama starring Ben Wishaw, and he is the key asset in Lilting. It's the story of a young man, played by Ben Wishaw, whose boyfriend tragically dies, and he tries to reconnect with his boyfriend's mother. His boyfriend is Anglo-Chinese, and the mother, who is Chinese and speaks no English, lives in a care home. So Ben Wishaw, in an attempt to try to connect with her in their grief, hires a translator to come along - initially so they can talk together, but also because she has started having this relationship with another ageing resident, played by Peter Bowles. He
only speaks English, she only speaks Chinese, so Ben Wishaw's gift to them is this translator, to try and bring their relationship together. So over the course of the movie you get this quite sweet-natured but also at times darker-edged relationship between the two older characters, and we don't see enough older characters in drama, and also you see Ben Wishaw, who is so good at grief and pain and let's face it, crying. He's terrific in Lilting and it's a nice and quietly affecting British drama.
