The Young Bengal Hotel was set up in 1930s by , Tarapada Guha. The 30-seater hotel is set inside an old house in Khidderpore. As you step inside the hotel, you feel like coming to a world barely influenced by capitalism. It’s been more than 88 years now; the place has neither seen air conditioners nor a swanky décor. Made to look like any dining area in a Bengali home, it has remained unchanged for years.

Pice was a currency denomination in colonial India. It was equal to one quarter of an ‘anna’. Today, this has become obsolete and so has these hotels. These eateries used to operate during lunch and dinner hours only. A customer had to pay for every single food item they wanted. Well, even the salt and lemon wedges were chargeable. These eateries were mainly meant for the office-goers or ‘babus’—who would rush into the eatery for home-cooked food. Such eateries were often the hotspots for intellectual discussions.
