In most cases you are going to need to join your main line to "leader" to avoid being bitten off or even chafed off by fish. For example, your main line on your fishing reel may be be 10lb monofilament, but your leader could be 30lb fluorocarbon to your hook. You will need to join the 2 lines together and it is far stealthier do line to line, rather than using a swivel.

The easiest knot for beginners as well as professionals is the "Double Uni-Knot". It is quick, easy and strong. This knot also works very well for joining braid to leader.
