Here's the mechanistic facts on that: pH is a dependent variable, i.e. it cannot be independently moderated. The only independent effectors of pH are temperature, pCO2, SID+ and ATOT-. Sulphur containing amino acids can liberate sulphate, this demonstrably has almost no effect at all on pH. Adding bicarbonate to a solution (sans a companion cation) will not affect the pH, as it is volatile and will exit the system as CO2 gas. The Cation will affect the SID+, and hence the pH. Bicarb conc. is also a dependent variable. It depends on what the pH is. Increased conc. cations will drive conc. 'protons' down. Anions drive conc. 'protons' higher.
