People from India’s North Eastern states often face racial discrimination and prejudice when they travel, study or work in other parts of the country. Many are misidentified based on their appearance and are frequently subjected to derogatory comments, taunts and stereotyping, such as being called “Chinese” or other offensive names because of their distinct physical features. These everyday experiences of casual racism affect young students, professionals and families, making them feel excluded and unsafe in their own country.

The tragic case of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, has brought this issue into national focus. In December 2025, while living and studying in Dehradun, Anjel and his brother were allegedly stopped and taunted with racial slurs during a routine errand, before an altercation turned violent. Anjel later succumbed to his injuries after spending weeks in hospital, sparking widespread public anger and calls for justice and stronger legal protections against racial hate crimes.

His death has reignited conversations about the deep-rooted racism and everyday discrimination many North Eastern Indians face, not as isolated incidents, but as part of a broader, systemic problem that affects people long before it turns deadly. Experts, activists and community leaders now urge better laws, sensitisation and accountability to ensure that every Indian, regardless of appearance or origin, can live without fear of prejudice and violence.
