I added a simple high low temperature setting to my soldering iron. The soldering iron was getting way too hot! Solder was evaporating and the tip was eroding very fast. I added a diode in line with the heating element. This way only halfwave made it to the element, which meant half the power! A switch can bridge out the diode for full power mode!
