Astronomers have decoded the "celestial songs"—vibrational oscillations—of two red giant stars using asteroseismology, uncovering turbulent histories including stellar cannibalism and ancient origins. In the Gaia BH2 system, the red giant BH2* (similar in mass to the Sun but vastly expanded) orbits a dormant black hole and shows evidence of devouring a companion star, spun up by tidal interactions during the "meal." Meanwhile, BH3* in the Gaia BH3 system, a 0.76-solar-mass red giant, orbits another black hole and may date back nearly to the universe's birth. These findings, from a University of Hawai’i-led team, highlight how stellar pulsations act like a bell's ring to expose a star's inner mass, age, and dramatic past events. Future TESS observations promise deeper insights into such binary systems.
