Safety shoes vs. forklift trucks: how stable is your foot protection? (English)

What happens when a forklift truck rolls over your safety shoe? The type examination for safety shoes carries out drop and pressure tests, but does not test any lateral load, for example from rolling over with a heavy vehicle. In this video, we therefore examine for ourselves what happens to safety footwear of the DIN EN ISO 20345 standard when it is rolled over by a forklift truck.

The forklift used for our safety shoe test has a weight of 1 ton and additionally carries a load of 1,250 kilograms on the fork, resulting in a calculated wheel load of 562.5 kilograms.

To check the deformation of the toe cap, a plastic cylinder is positioned below the cap and can then be measured. The shoe cannot be used as a whole, otherwise we have no access to the toe cap. Therefore the rear part of the shoe is cut away for the test.

Now the shoe is rolled over by the stacker with moderate speed.

For shoe size 42, a minimum residual height of 14 millimetres must be maintained for the plasticine cylinder. In our test we have a residual height of 19.55 millimetres, which corresponds to a plus of over 30%.

Safety shoes conforming to the DIN EN ISO 20345 standard therefore protect you even in the event of extreme lateral loads due to an accident caused by rolling over. Of course, a safety shoe does not make you invulnerable. Every employee contributes through attention and mutual consideration to ensuring that safe work is possible at the workplace.
