In this Hyfindr Expo Highlights, at the 2024 Hydrogen Technology Expo in Hamburg, Mike Shannahan from Henkel Corporation presents Loctite’s hydrogen-compatible thread sealing solutions. Henkel's Loctite brand offers a range of sealing products designed to prevent leakage in threaded components, essential for hydrogen applications. Loctite provides solutions for various pressure levels, including materials that withstand up to 1,500 bar. Each product is certified with Kiwa for hydrogen compatibility, ensuring safe integration with hydrogen and other gases.
The lineup includes Loctite 55, a thread-sealing cord popular for low-pressure applications up to 10 bar, commonly used in both commercial and residential plumbing. It’s easy to apply, resembling a dental floss that wraps around threads for an immediate seal. For higher pressures, Loctite’s anaerobic gel materials cure in the absence of oxygen and presence of metal, creating a durable seal that resists hydrogen leakage. Additionally, these anaerobic sealants prevent vibration loosening and corrosion, making them ideal for industrial settings like pumps, compressors, and valves.
Shannahan mentions that Henkel is expanding its hydrogen-ready portfolio to include flange sealants, adhesives, and coatings, aimed at applications in fuel cells and electrolyzers. This forward-looking approach highlights Loctite’s commitment to supporting hydrogen infrastructure.
