Pakistan has announced the creation of a new military branch called the Army Rocket Force Command (ARFC). The announcement was made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the country's 79th Independence Day celebration.


Here are the key details about this new force:

Purpose: The ARFC is designed to consolidate, modernize, and unify Pakistan's conventional missile and rocket forces. Its exclusive mandate is to handle, deploy, and execute missile operations in a conventional war.


Motivation: The formation of the ARFC is reportedly a direct result of lessons learned from a recent four-day military confrontation with India in May. According to a senior security official, the conflict highlighted a need for a dedicated long-range conventional strike capability to deter India without resorting to a nuclear response.


Structure: The ARFC will have its own command within the military, separate from the nuclear-focused Army Strategic Forces Command. This structure is believed to be modeled after China's People's Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF).


Capabilities: The new force will be equipped with modern technology and is intended to enhance Pakistan's conventional warfare capabilities. It will be responsible for operating conventional missiles, including ballistic, cruise, and potentially hypersonic missiles.


Existing Arsenal: The ARFC will integrate and manage Pakistan's existing missile systems, which include:

Ballistic Missiles: Shaheen series (Shaheen-I/IA, Shaheen-II, Shaheen-III) and Ghauri series.

Cruise Missiles: Babur series (land and sea-launched) and Ra'ad series (air-launched).

Guided Rocket Artillery: Fatah-I and Fatah-II.
