Riparian areas link water bodies and aquatic environments with upland land uses. Riparian areas are also called buffer zones or streamside management zones and are useful on all sizes of streams, creeks, and rivers – even lakes and ponds. Stream buffers are important elements of watershed management and offer benefits such as protecting streambanks from erosion, holding soil in place, taking up nutrients in runoff water, and reducing flood damage. Streamside management zones are required for logging operations to be compliant with the KY Forest Conservation Act and the Ag Water Quality Act. The widths of these buffers are dependent upon the slope of the land and the type of stream (perennial streams have wider buffer widths than intermittent streams). Intermittent streams flow certain times of the year during wetter seasons and cease to flow during dry periods.
