In today's travel vlog, I discuss the 10 Things to Never Do in Portugal & Don'ts of Portugal. This is part one of a two part video serious on things to never do in Portugal & Don't Do This in Lisbon Portugal!

10 Things You Should Never Do In Portugal

1 - Never say gracias! It’s obrigado not gracias for saying thank you. Portuguese people speak Portuguese not Spanish! While Portuguese and Spanish are similar because they both have latin roots - they are different languages. Even thank you is better than gracias - most Portuguese speak English. Side note: Since Portuguese people do not speak Spanish…..they are not hispanic!!! Don’t call them hispanic!

2 - Never try to find dinner before 7pm. Most restaurants will be closed and even if they are open. The kitchen will probably be closed and you’ll just be able to get pastries and drinks. The Portuguese eat dinner from 7 to around 11pm. Side note: You want be able to find lunch earlier than 1pm either!

3 - Never forget your sunscreen. Portugal gets around 300 days of sun a year in most parts. Even when it’s cold, the sun is beating down on you. So make sure you put on some sunscreen before you go out.

4 - Never assume things brought to your table before the meal are free. Unlike many places, things brought to the table like bread, olives or butter cost extra if you eat them. Yes I said butter, they will charge you for each little packet of butter. This little trick is called couvert and it’s a way to get extra money out of you. So make sure you ask - most likely it’s not free.

5 - Never assume that a Portuguese person will be on time. In my world if someone says to meet them at 7pm, I show up at 6:45pm. That’s not the case here in Portugal. A Portuguese person telling you they will meet you at 7pm means sometime between 7pm and 8pm!
