Ladakh is a high altitude Himalayan region in northern part of India. Ladakh is called the cold desert because of its cold weather and dry mountains. Majority of the population in Ladakh lives in small and remote villages. Village life in Ladakh is still very ancient and nature friendly as compared to the rest of the world. Zanskar valley is an interior and lesser explored region in Ladakh. Pensi la pass connects Zanskar with Suru Valley and Shinku la pass connects Zanskar with Lahaul valley of Himachal. Phuktal or Phugtal gompa is one of the oldest and most spectacular monasteries in the Indian Himalayas. Phuktal gompa is built on the edge of a huge rock in the Zanskar region of Ladakh. There’s a cave on top floor of the monastery where the monks used to live before they constructed the monastery.
