Bovet 1822's early history and origins:

In Bovet's Château de Môtiers, Bespoke unit came across an interesting document in the Tour Diesse.

Here, Christophe Persoz explained its significance in relation to Bovet's early history.

Made between 1822 and 1830, it represents Bovet's younger days. We note also that there are only the names of Frédéric and Alphonse Bovet.

In fact, the story starts in 1814 when the three Bovet brothers (Édouard, Alphonse and Frédéric) left to London to study horology.

Four years later, Édouard Bovet left London and went to China to access the new and exotic market for Swiss watches. He took four pocket watches with him, which he sold very quickly.

Furthermore, he sold them for CHF 10,000, which represents 1 million Swiss francs today.

With two brothers in London as well as another in still in Fleurier (Gustav), the four decided to open business in China.

While Édouard managed the sales directly in China, Alphonse and Frédéric handled shipping via the East India Company. Meanwhile, the fourth brother oversaw manufacturing back home.

In 1820, they launched their company, which was registered in London in 1822. This is why only two names are on the original documents.

You will also note "Shanghai" being written on the poster. This is where the story started until they reached all four corners of the Empire.

The text beside it warns the public about the counterfeit watch market that was slowly rising in China. It informed the collector on where to buy their timepieces.
