Uncover the fascinating history of Abney Park Cemetery!

Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, is simply a beautiful little space. One of the "magnificent seven" cemeteries of London, that also include Nunhead, Brompton, and Highgate, this open space is a sight to behold.

For hundreds of years London's dead were buried in parish churchyards but as the population exploded at the beginning of the 19th century the graveyards just ran out of space. It was decided in the 1830's that the dead needed to buried away from central London, and so these seven immense graveyards were created.

They are gorgeous places to visit these days, not in a macabre way, but because of the natural way the cemeteries are left to be emcompassed by nature.
