The crystal wine glasses clinked against bone china as our family gathered for our traditional Sunday dinner at the mansion. "Victoria," Dad began, swirling his bordeaux, "we need to discuss your research funding."

Katherine smirked behind her wine glass. "Finally. That basement lab was embarrassing for the family name."
"But we're close to a breakthrough," I protested, my heart racing. "The quantum stability tests are showing promising results-"
"Promising isn't profitable," Dad cut in. "Maxwell Industries needs certainty, not theories. I've already arranged the sale to Global Tech."
Mom dabbed her lips with a napkin. "Darling, it's time to do something... practical. Katherine's division is bringing in real revenue."
"By copying other companies' innovations," I muttered.
"By making money," Katherine shot back. "While you play with your equations in the dark."
Dad pushed the papers closer. "Sign the transfer documents. Global Tech is offering two million for the entire project."
"Two million?" I almost laughed. "Dad, the potential applications alone-"
"Are worthless without proof," he interrupted. "Sign."
My phone buzzed in my bag. Then again. And again.
"Popular tonight?" Katherine sneered.
With trembling fingers, I pulled out my phone. Three messages from the patent office marked 'URGENT' lit up my screen.
I opened the first one: "QUANTUM STABILITY ALGORITHM PATENT #457892 APPROVED."
The second: "BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNATION GRANTED."
