"Look, we had two suspected cases of monkeypox. One was ruled out as negative, one tested positive for the class of viruses to which monkeypox belongs. And we're waiting on confirmation from the CDC, which we hope to get in the next day or two. But I want to I want New Yorkers to feel a little bit reassured. This is not a highly transmissible and deadly virus. This is a relatively mild respiratory virus that is traveling by droplets, which means you need to have prolonged contact with someone, prolonged close contact with someone in order to transmit. It transmits more like TB than it does like COVID. But we will say when you're indoors, wear a mask -- that's going to protect you from whatever exposures, including COVID, including monkeypox."

"Protect yourself with the mask. Call your doctor right away if you experience symptoms that -- and the symptoms can be relatively nonspecific at first. It can be fever, it can be headache, it can be lymph node swelling. And then only then does it sometimes progress to the rash that we see is characteristics of orthopoxviruses. Just watch out. Just watch out for any of those symptoms in yourself. Call your doctor. But don't be alarmed. Don't be alarmed. As I said, it's not a highly transmissible virus. So what the city is also doing is rigorous contact tracing around these cases. So we're looking at household contacts, we're looking at chains of transmission, we're looking at travel histories. And so that gives us reassurance that we know where these networks are and we can contain it."

New York City's health commissioner is urging calm among city residents amid fears of an outbreak of monkeypox.
Dr. Ashwan Vasan said Tuesday that the city has already ruled out one of its two suspected cases of the virus. The other is pending confirmation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"I want to I want New Yorkers to feel a little bit reassured. This is not a highly transmissible and deadly virus. This is a relatively mild respiratory virus that is traveling by droplets, which means you need to have prolonged contact with someone," he said.
City epidemiologists have begun reaching people who may have been in contact with the person.
The possible infection in New York comes as the World Health Organization has identified about 80 cases globally, and roughly 50 more suspected cases. Health officials in Massachusetts confirmed its first case of monkeypox on May 18.
The virus originates in primates and other wild animals, and causes fever, body aches, chills and fatigue in most patients. People with severe cases can develop rash and lesions on the face, hands and other parts of the body.
