In this video, we are going to talk about the ILS Categories, you will learn what the ILS categories are and how to choose the right procedure when the visibility is not great!

For the same ILS procedure, you have different categories:
CAT I
CAT II
CAT III A, IIIB, IIIC.

Depending on your RVR (Runway Visual Range) you should fly a specific ILS category, this is so because each one of these has a different required RVR minimum.

For example, the CATI has a minimum required RVR of 550m, and if the reported RVR at your destination airport is 400m you cannot fly that procedure because your Runway Visual Range is below the minimum required.

In this case, you can fly an ILS CAT II that has a lower RVR minimum (300m).

So as you can see, depending on the present RVR you should fly one category or another.

One of the biggest differences between the CAT I and the rest of the ILS Categories is that when flying an ILS CATI you disconnect the autopilot on final and land the plane manually, while the CAT II and IIIIs ILS require an Autoland (some operators perform a manual landing out of a CAT II).

This is so because on the ILS Categories II and IIIs you are under low visibility operations.

The decision altitude/height varies depending on the category of the procedure.
