The Prince of Wales Edward VIII Zoological Garden, popularly known as Lucknow Zoological Garden, was established in the year 1921 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lucknow. The idea of ​​establishing a Zoological Garden in Lucknow was received from the then Governor of the state, Sir Harcourt Butler and was enthusiastically received by the leading zamindars of the state and prominent citizens of the state, who generously donated to build animal houses and cages. Animals and birds for periodic display.
A committee of management was formed consisting of donors and other prominent citizens. The Commissioner of Lucknow, Colonel Fenthorpe, was appointed the first Chairman and Sheikh Maqbool Hussain as the first Secretary of the Commission. The committee was registered on 17 August 1926 under the Societies Registration Act.
