Описание к видео The TRUTH about painting dry times - revealed! 🤫🧑‍🎨

Good things come for those who wait…😤

Panels from ‪@ucsart‬

Ever just wanted to know exactly how long artists wait for each layer of their painting to dry, from start to finish?

Well you’re in luck! 😝 I thought I’d explain my process & dry times in one video in the hopes that it would save other artists the time it’s taken me to
research the best approach.

I see A LOT of artists skipping or rushing steps, but you can’t really rush a chemical process & it’s important to follow proper dry times so that each layer you add does its job.

🐇GAC10: 2 COATS, 2-3 DAYS
🤝GESSO (FOR ACRYLIC): 3 COATS, 1-2 DAYS
✋GESSO (FOR OIL PAINT): 3 COATS, 2-4 WEEKS
💨ACRYLIC PAINT: 2-4 WEEKS
🐌⏳💤🥱OIL PAINT: 3-12+ MONTHS
💖VARNISH: 1-2 DAYS

1️⃣The first layer I put on a raw canvas or wood panel is called a size (a sealing layer). It protects the surface & the paint from each other as acrylics can be discoloured & oils can seep down & rot. You can use acrylic mediums or PVA size but I use 2 coats of GAC100.

2️⃣Then I add acrylic gesso primer. The number of layers depends on the brand’s recommendation. If you add enough layers of gesso it can act as a size & you can skip the first step. I wait about 1-2 days for gesso to dry between coats or before I use acrylic paint on top. But I wait 2 weeks to a month for it to be fully cured before using oil paints on top of acrylic gesso.

3️⃣ A lot of people don’t realize acrylic paint has 2 stages of drying. They can be touch dry within seconds. Many people assume the paint is done at this point, but it takes a 2-6 weeks for all the water & solvent to fully evaporate, depending on the thickness. The adhesion & hardness of the paint aren’t at their best until the paint’s cured.

3️⃣In my mind oil paints have 3 stages of drying. The painting will be unsmudgable & may feel dry in a few hours to a week. It takes longer to be fully touch dry so that you can ship & show the work, but the painting isn’t fully cured & ready to varnish for an average of 6 months.

4️⃣as far as varnish I use either 1 coat of Gamvar (which can be applied when the painting is fully touch dry) or 3 coats of Winsor & Newton. Neither take long to dry - just 1-2 days.

If this was helpful, please consider buying me a ☕️ (link in bio)!!
