STORYLINE:
Hundreds of foreigners, mostly French nationals, have flown out of Ivory Coast since mutinous soldiers staged an attempted coup ten days ago.
US soldiers patrolled the international airport near the capital Yamoussoukro on Saturday, as more French nationals waited to fly out.
The foreigners - apart from 20 or 30 people who want to stay on - were evacuated by French soldiers from the rebel held city of Bouake in the north.
As they waited to be processed by embassy and consular officials, many French nationals told Associated Press they were worried about what would happen to the people left behind.
In Bouake after the French soldiers retreated to positions 30 kms away rebel soldiers, who had cooperated with the evacuation, established roadblocks on roads out of Bouake to stop locals fleeing.
Those left behind in a city which has been under sporadic gunfire the past week and has no water or electricity, fear an imminent attack by government soldiers.
On Friday thousands of Ivory Coast citizens with bundles of goods and cooking pots on their heads desperately jammed roads out of the city ,seeking a way out.
They pleaded with rebel soldiers at checkpoints to be let out, but were turned back.
Rebel soldiers were quelled in Abidjan, but took over Bouake, Korhogo and other areas in the north of the country. More than 270 people were killed in the uprising - none of them foreigners.
The rebels have found a degree of support in Ivory Coast's north, whose people complain of being treated as
second-class citizens by the southern-based government led by President Laurent Gbagbo.
Northerners are predominantly Muslim, and of different ethnic groups than the largely Christian southerners.
