In this video, we’re diving into the world of Apple’s forgotten & strange & unusual 1998 Rhapsody OS DR2 (Developer Release) for PC compatibles - this time running on modern hardware, as like I like it.

I’ve managed to install this rare piece of computing history on an i7-3770 CPU with on an OCZ Agility 60 SSD - only 8.4 GB will be available while using the IDE driver, so the smaller the SSD the less space is wasted.

An optical drive is required. A SATA optical drive is just fine, thanks to the SATA - IDE Legacy emulation properly done by a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3-B3 motherboard which also features USB 3 and SATA 3 and it was used to install Windows NT 3.1 as you can witness in this video:    • Running Windows NT 3.1 on (almost) modern ...

We also take Rhapsody online (yes, really!) and explore the browser options, FTP file transfers, and even run Doom on the system—because what’s an OS without a little gaming..

By the way, Rhapsody OS was the foundation for what would eventually become macOS, and it’s fascinating to see how this early, experimental version of Apple’s software handles modern hardware. Watch as I walk through the installation process: one this is for sure - we need so start from an actual floppy drive or have very good floppy USB emulation - since we need to use two floppy disks to get the installation started. A optical drive is mandatory as well.
